Update — April 2026: Unblocked MCP is now generally available. We've shipped a significant overhaul alongside a brand-new Unblocked CLI. Current docs: MCP overview, CLI overview, Unblocked Cookbook. The original beta announcement follows below.
What's new: MCP overhaul and CLI launch#
MCP overhaul: fewer tool calls, faster answers. Early adopters told us MCP was being called too often during code generation, slowing things down. We've consolidated the tools and dramatically improved performance and answer quality, with tuning for Cursor, Claude, Codex, and Copilot. Get started with the new MCP.
New Unblocked CLI: deterministic, scriptable access. MCP is flexible, but teams also need something reliable for CI, scripts, and background jobs. The CLI gives you a direct, scriptable interface to Unblocked so you can pull context explicitly, compose it into workflows, and run it headless. It can also be used by agents themselves when you want explicit, reliable control over how context is pulled in. Get started with the CLI.
Prebuilt skills in the Unblocked Cookbook. We put together an open-source cookbook of prebuilt skills using the CLI and MCP. Each one helps an agent gather context for real engineering tasks like planning, code review, ticket enrichment, and bug validation. Every skill includes a headless version for CI, scripts, or autonomous agents. Fork and customize from the Unblocked Cookbook on GitHub.
Note for existing users: If you've written custom skills against the previous MCP tool surface, you'll need to update them. See the MCP overview for the current shape.
Unblocked is now available as an MCP server, supercharging tools like Cursor, Claude Code and VSCode.
These tools are great at small, well-defined tasks like writing unit tests or working on isolated parts of your code. However, they often fall short when the task requires deep or distributed context like understanding legacy business logic buried across multiple services.
The reason? They lack the tribal knowledge that lives beyond the source code repositories.
What is Unblocked MCP (beta)?#
The output of these tools is directly proportional to the quality of context you provide.
That’s where Unblocked MCP comes in - it surfaces the knowledge your team already relies on, filling in the gaps and helping these tools generate significantly better code.
We’ve already seen great feedback from early adopters:
